There was no doubt that Marathon would crush Zion Lutheran at Friday’s game played on Sept. 12, 2008. This was because the prep rally during 7th period earlier that day was far too extreme for it to not hype our players for the game. Who knows what would have had happened at the game if we didn’t have the pep rally? We might have lost the game. It seemed that there was a lot of spirit coming out of the sophomores during the Prep Rally. The Spirit Stick was won by the sophomores, which left some of the other high school students a little bummed out about when that happened. Maybe next time the freshmen, the juniors, or the seniors might be able to win the Spirit Stick back just as the sophomores had won it that Friday afternoon.

Game 2 Marathon versus Key West: Away Game Final Score: Marathon 21- Key West 14 At 7:30 pm, our Marathon stands were filled with school spirited parents, alumni, students and band members. With the help of the Varsity Cheerleading squad, they brought two buses filled with spirited students down to the game. “It was great to be able to take so many spirited kids down to the event that night. We will definitely continue this tradition in the games to come and next year” -stated Varsity Cheerleader, Stormy Bezanis. The Dolphins raced to a 21-0 lead. A late Key West threat ended when freshman, Trevelle Beckford intercepted a pass on the 5-yard line. On the ground the dolphins had an unstoppable running back, a 5-foot-3, 145-pound Junior AJ Freeman. Freeman rushed for more than 200 yards. Marathon’s touchdowns came on an 8-yard pass from Nyran Ross to Hector Vicioso, a 42-yard screen pass from Ross to Kenny White and a 1-yard run by Ross. The final score of the game ended up as 21-14, Marathon. On to the next victory!
The world is full of fine art: art of color, art of music, art of sculpture, art in the spoken and written tongue. Sure, we hear about the arts like music through the band at football games, or visual arts when we walk through the office where paintings hang brazenly on the walls behind glass. So prepare to go on a trip to see all the arts this school has to offer. First, we will start with these paintings by our MHS Art students.
Untitled by Deysiaide “Deysi” Delgado Done as a study in repetition using hues of red, from the lightest pink to the deepest burgundy and dark browns, Deysi creates an eerie serenity which leaves an unsettling feeling in the gut from the many dead leafless trees and the barren dirt road which leads to nowhere in particular.
Untitled by Christopher Falcon Using a wide array of colors to create a stained glass effect along the border, cupping an anamorphous figure that at times appears to be a fish or a graceful white bird. The painting is lit from within by the yellow ball in the center casting its light on the rest of the piece making it appear luminescent.
Experimentation in International Living (EIL)- Its mission is to find peace through communication and cooperation. Starting in 1932 with over 70,000 participants, E.I.L.provides a chance for sophomores and juniors to go abroad and learn about other cultures. E.I.L. also allows students to examine certain issues such as prejudice and intolerance. The program helps to build communication skills, increase self confidence and raise global awareness. The program lasts for three to five weeks and has twenty-seven countries around the world to choose from, such as China, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Turkey, Morocco, and Australia. The project based program focuses on themes like community service, language study, ecology, travel, or the arts. During the expedition you will stay with a host from your chosen country, and experience their customs and traditions first hand. With the experience from the trip, you will gain the ability to open your eyes to new things. To participate in the E.I.L. program you need to go through an application process that includes paperwork and an in-person interview. The information from the application process is to match you with a group of students from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. Every year the program searches for motivated young men and women wishing to learn about different cultures. Here at Marathon our Take Stock in Children program works hand in hand with the E.I.L. organization to help sponsor and give financial aide to students who are interested in the program. When asked about her thoughts on E.I.L. Ms. Hipson stated, “E.I.L. is an incredible opportunity being offered and if you don’t grasp it, it will be gone.” This past summer one of our own Take Stock students, Adonis Aviles, traveled to Australia with his group for five weeks. Adonis said, “The program helped me experience a totally new culture and see things I never would have seen otherwise”. The national E.I.L. director, John Meislin will be coming to Marathon High on December 3rd of this year to do presentations and explain more about the trips. For more information you can contact Ms. Hipson in room 1209 or www.usexperiment.org.

A Chat with Ms. McPherson

By Nicky Smith

Freshwater Conch and Key West High School Alumni, Ms. Wendy
McPherson has joined the MHS team as our new assistant principal.
After having moved from Indiana at the young age of 10, she calls Key
West her hometown. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at
Florida State University and at the University of West Florida she earned
her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. She returned home to
The Keys to do what she loves, working in the educational system. She
spent 11 years teaching in an elementary school in Key West and another
five years working as a district administrator, specializing in Language
Arts and Reading. As part of her job, she has visited pretty much every
school in The Keys and proudly boasts, “I’ve always liked Marathon
High the best and it’s absolutely beautiful! The blue and gold school
colors are also a plus!” Ms. McPherson will be a wonderful addition
to the MHS Dolphin Staff. We look forward to all the things she will
accomplish.
When she isn’t spending all her time with work making sure everything
is running smoothly she enjoys being outside and in the water or curling
up with a good book. She plans on staying here in The Keys because this
is where her home, heart and family are. She loves it here and the beauty
of Keys doesn't escape her.
This year she’s taken on the role of assistant principal. When asked why
she chose the position she explained that although she loved working as
a teacher and district administrator, she added, “I am always looking for
my next challenge and this is definitely it!”
Scoot over MHS veterans we have a few newcomers on campus to mix things up a little. Let’s welcome seven new teachers with open arms: Marybeth Alexander, Jessica Snook, Ryan Fortenbaugh, Karl Aping, Christina Belotti, Danielle Dominguez, Brian Flanigan, and Philip Steadham. They are ready to take our school by storm! Drifting from the other side of US1, we see some familiar faces; our sixth grade teachers are here to join the MHS staff and are ready to leave their Switlik porpoise family and join our MHS Bull Dolphins! Here are a few comments from some teachers: Phillip Steadham: “I would like to begin by saying MHS is an amazing school filled with positive bright minds that will carry them far in life. It is also a pleasure to come to work at a place where staff and students possess not typically found at most schools…” Ryan Fortenbaugh: “I am adjusting well to the school, and it is mainly because of the experienced teachers giving me a hand when I need it. Everything is going well and I hope it stays like this for the entire year.” Brian Flanigan: “I am adjusting to MHS very well; I hit the ground running and have been doing well since the start of school. My classes are in fine running order. So far, I like everything here at MHS. We have a great administration as well as a great faculty, staff and students.” Jamie Buhyoff: “I love the new school. I love getting out at 2:30 so that I have the afternoon still to workout but not sure I like getting here by 7:30. Switlik starts at 9:00, so just as the new 6th, 7th and 9th graders I am having to adjust to earlier start time; So far so good.” Danielle Dominguez: “I am very happy to be here. I recently moved here from Miami and love living in the keys. I like wearing flip flops to school.”

It’s a new a year, new beginnings, new teachers, new students, many new changes in the air. Of course our Dolphin Pride staff thought it would only be appropriate if we sat with our principal, Mr. Russell, for an interview on his goals and expectations for this 2008-2009 school year. Mr. Russell sat comfortably in his chair, with a warm welcoming smile on his face. He shook my hand boldly and I could see a hint of excitement in his eyes. With no hesitation we began a wonderful conversation about what he expects from us as a student body. When I asked him about his goals for the school he responded by saying he wanted to close the achievement gap and improve student performance. He wants all of the students who are eager to go to college to take AP and DE classes, with the encouragement of all the MHS teachers. He says he has high expectations for the new teachers and students because he knows what we can achieve. He mentioned how excited he was that the new campus has encouraged students’ outlook and performance on their studies. Mr. Russell definitely seemed to have confidence in our student and faculty. At the end of the interview I shook his hand, took a picture, and walked away pleased with the interview.
The Florida Keys are filled with sandy beaches
and crystal clear water. Most people think there is no
downside to this paradise, but there is. Being a chain
of islands we’re an easy target for hurricanes. Six
months out of every year we have to be prepared to
pack up and leave at any second. Our first big threat
was Hurricane Fay, causing us to miss the first two
days of our school year. Most recently was Hurricane
Ike. Predicted to be a category 4, we lucked out when
we only experienced tropical storm weather. None
the less, we ended up with a five day weekend. Of
course, we love getting a few days off from school,
but we always have to keep in mind that we will have
to make up the days we missed. We’ve only had one
full week of school, and this is not the end. We still
have two months of Hurricane season. Hopefully
we'll get lucky and don’t get hit again, because if we
miss anymore school we might as well say "bye, bye"
to winter break.
