The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) is part of Florida’s overall plan to increase student achievement by implementing higher standards. The FCAT, administered to students in Grades 3-11, contains two basic components: criterion-referenced tests (CRT), measuring selected benchmarks in Mathematics, Reading, Science, and Writing from the Sunshine State Standards (SSS); and norm-referenced tests (NRT) in Reading and Mathematics, measuring individual student performance against national norms.

  • Students will be testing throughout the day. Students arriving late for school will be detained until testing has finished. Make up testing will be scheduled for a later date/time.

  • Any student found with an electronic device that reproduces, transmits, calculates, or records (e.g., a a cell phone, camera, or pager) in his or her pocket, at his or her desk, or within his or her reach during testing will have their test invalidated.

Parent Tips:

  • Rearrange after-school and evening activities on the days before each section of the test if possible
  • Ensure that your student gets a good night's sleep before the test
  • Make sure your student has a nutritious breakfast on test days
  • Have your student come to school prepared with sharpened pencils and a good eraser
  • Send a light snack for your student if he/she needs something to eat on the longer testing days to maintain energy
  • Discuss with your student any test review materials which might be sent home
  • Realize that your student may seem more tired than usual after each day of testing
  • Express your support and confidence in your student to do well on FCAT
  • Help your student understand that testing is a part of the instructional process, and nothing to be feared.
