Today we put up the HWAT (Horizontal Wind Axis Turbine) turbine at Key West High School.

This project would not be possible for the hard work of George Wheeler and Chuck Sellers. These gentlemen worked hard to safely put the turbine up. George had the forward thinking to bring the forklift, which helped us out of many a jam. It was a tough, exciting, and stressful. Big thanks to all – especially James Howard, Fred Sims, Peter Horton, and Bo Rivas. Also, Paul Landino, who sold us the turbine at a discount rate, came down from Ft. Lauderdale to assist the installation, and provided invaluable wisdom. If you are interested in a turbine of your own, don’t hesitate to call.

The long term success Pramod Jain, of Wind Energy Consulting, who after endless phone calls, helped determine the best location of the turbine.

A few notes.
1. The turbine blades won’t spin until it is connected to the grid. So, if it is windy, and the blades aren’t spinning, this is why. If the power goes out, the blades stop spinning. This is to protect anyone who works on the power lines when the power goes out. This is part of the “smart grid” scheme. The blades should spin by December or January.
2. There is also a data component that needs to be connected, and we’ll keep you posted.
3. Another one will go up on top of the Crisco Disco, once some kinks get worked out.

Florida Green Alliance, of Tallahassee, provided the funding for the tower and turbine which we are very grateful. Gene Lewis has been invaluable coordinating between everyone.

Biggest thanks go to the staff and family of KWHS, who provide a learning atmosphere where this could happen. Thank you!

Best,
